According to Kalashatra Govinda, this is the second phase in the great cycle of human development. Each of the following years has a relationship to a particular chakra, beginning with the root chakra, but the overarching theme is no longer trust but sensuality.
Gradually children begin to experience the sensual world in regard to material things, in the control and influence they have on their environment and themselves, in the pleasure they take from their senses, in love and fellowship, in communication, in the capacity for insight, and in spirituality. Children senses are very active they experience the world through sight, hearing, and touch. This is not, however, given enough attention in their everyday experience. In school they are forced to sit still and learn. They acquire knowledge, but their senses are giving short shrift. Many teachers recognize this problem but think that if children don't learn now, they won't be able to master complex thoughts and ideas later in life.
The sensory experience is the basis for constructive thinking. If the essential energies of the sacral chakra are not allowed free play, the energies of the higher chakras will be constricted. Children who have not learned to grasp the world with their senses will have difficulty later in life organizing and processing their impressions.
Therefore we should understand that children of this age can sharpen all of their senses and that they spend a lot of time in nature, playing outside, climbing trees, and even rolling around in the dirt. When children in this phase are given the opportunity to expand their senses, they learn how to enjoy themselves and acquire the ability to take pleasure in what life has to offer.
And then, there's the Adolescence stage from ages 15 to 21...stay tuned!!!
